Laurence Davies
Laurence Davies joined the Philharmonia in 1997 and was appointed Principal Horn the following year. As a member of this prestigious orchestra he performs with some of the world’s finest musicians and has regularly visited the greatest international festivals and concert halls. Laurence has been particularly featured as named soloist on Telarc’s CD of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and Opera Rara’s recording of Rossini’s Otello.
As a concerto soloist with the orchestra he has performed Britten’s Serenade at the South Bank Centre with Mark Padmore (a piece he has played with many of England’s leading tenors) and Bayan Northcott’s Horn Concerto also at the SBC. He has also performed Schumann’s Konzertstück with the Philharmonia on several occasions and is one of the soloists on the acclaimed Deutsche Grammophon recording with Christian Thielemann. Most recently Laurence was asked to perform Mozart’s 4th Horn Concerto at the Philharmonia’s South Bank memorial concert to his predecessor Dennis Brain at which he also gave the world premiere of Tim Jackson’s ‘Atalanta’ with the Philharmonia horn section and Britten’s ‘In Memoriam’ with Richard Watkins, Michael Thompson and Nigel Black.
Laurence is in great demand as a guest Principal with the UK’s other symphony and chamber orchestras and as a chamber musician with such prestigious groups as London Winds and the Nash Ensemble. He is also a featured soloist on Cala Record’s new London Horn Sound CD and can be heard on many film and TV soundtracks.
